A new addition to our shop this past season (though not to our own personal arsenals) RL Winston's Vapor is an ideal 5 wt trout rod for under $300. Amazingly offered at this value price, it possesses all of the qualities that have come to make Winston known as one of the premier rod companies for decades. As are most 5 wt models, the Vapor is probably one of the most versatile of my collection; the reason is because of its ability to target a wide range of distances, making perfect presentations within just a few feet to as many as fifty. In addition, its agreeable fast-action and "much feel, much flex" concept makes it manageable to cast in a stiff wind, resulting in a versatile package that can be used anywhere from small trout streams in Pennsylvania to the Aniak in Alaska.
An agreeable pairing to Winston's Vapor, Orvis has just released its Battenkill Large Arbor Trout reel, a variation on its forever-popular Mid Arbor design. This new design offers maximum backing capacity and quicker line pick up for big fish on larger streams will still maintaining a lightweight package that is compatible to pair with higher-end rods. And at under $200, this value-priced reel won't dent the budget when adding it to your case. A numbered, indexed drag knob with positive clicks for each setting means repeatable adjustments on the fly, and its smooth and reliable carbon and stainless center disc drag with a one-way rollerbearing handles those big fish with ease.
