Leaders are the critical transition from your fly line to the fly, and several types exist to match the fly line you are using. Most fisherman prefer 9 ft. leaders for most types of fishing along with a variety of tippet sizes. Longer leaders (10 ft. to 12 ft.) work well for nymphing and “high sticking” techniques, whereas shorter leaders ( 7.5 ft. ) generally work well for streamer fishing with sink tip lines. Fluorocarbon tippet will dramatically improve your rate of success in clear conditions due to its similar refractory properties to that of water. That being said, a selection of leaders and tippet material can make or break your day of fishing.
